Leading by Example: How to Communicate the Image of Image Consultants Through the 4P’sJoan Bachmeier AICI CIP Is the image of Image Consultants intact or in need of a makeover?Taking a closer look at our image as image consultants as well as our image as an organization can help answer that question. The Image Industry is a profession that can come under scrutiny by the public and one another in the image field. The following 4 P’s are concrete ways to establish and maintain an image of Professionalism, Presence, Passion and Personable.Professionalism: I believe that it is our responsibility as Image Consultants to, at all times, practice and display professionalism. We should be above reproach in all that we do and say. Each and every one of us has a responsibility for the credibility of our industry. When dealing with client’s ethical behavior is of the utmost importance. Our conduct and actions should reflect honesty, integrity and good character. We are all mentors not only for our clients but to each other. A supportive, non-judgmental attitude is what will ensure our success. All too often we judge each other, and are very critical of people within our own industry.Being right never gives you the right to undermined or condemn. We can all learn from each other. Exhibiting self control and discretion is a true sign of professionalism and is our obligation to our colleagues. By supporting and encouraging one another we will stand strong.Presence: Your presence, posture and poise are all powerful examples of your work! Remember you are your business. By demonstrating your creativity, talent and congruency in your personal presentation you are representing this industry proudly. Through a polished and impeccable appearance you declare that you believe in what you preach. Your distinguished personal standard for your appearance will also reflect on your professional success. By never contradicting your presence as an image consultant you will be credible and believable. Your visual image can never be underestimated; it does speak volumes about your profession. The message is loud and clear and knowing this is power. Confidence and grace will serve you well!Passion: This is truly an industry that requires passion for your work! Believing in what you do and having a sincere desire to motivate and lead people to reach their full potential is crucial. Having passion for your work gives you the energy needed for the dedication and commitment required to be successful.Personable: The image business is a People Business. Your job may be Impression Management however it is undoubtedly people oriented. We are educators working with people with their best interest at heart. Respecting our clients and exhibiting a genuine spirit of concern will establish life long clientele that are happy to return again. We are quickly approaching our annual conference which provides us with opportunities for education, networking, mentoring and inspiration. As an Image Consultant I am truly proud of my profession because it is my heartfelt belief that this industry is not only needed, but necessary. Our work can be life changing.
